HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR TATTOO

  • After at least 2 hours (or overnight if recommended by your artist), remove the bandage and gently wash with warm water and unscented liquid antibacterial soap.
(Dial works great!). Rebandage at your own risk. (Doing so can trap in bacteria)

  • Pat dry with a paper towel and apply a thin layer of Aquaphor, Hustle Butter, or Griffin Salve three to four times a day for the first week.
After the first week, use an unscented lotion like Curel (Or Tattoo Rain’s Body Lotion) until skin returns to its pre-tattoo condition.
Keep perfumes, scented lotions, hairspray, bug spray, and makeup away from your tattoo while healing.

  • Do NOT use anything to keep your tattoo moisturized/clean other than what you have been told by your artist.
This includes hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, bar soap, Bacitracin, Neosporin, rash creams, oils, etc.
Doing so will greatly hinder the healing and look of your tattoo, and can lead to infection.

  • Stay out of sunlight and tanning booths until tattoo is healed.
Once healed, make sure to use the highest SPF sunscreen when you go outside to make sure your tattoo ages correctly.
Another great option is Tattoo Rain’s Sunscreen, specifically formulated for tattoos! (You can use chapstick if you are in a pinch and do not have sunscreen available)

  • Do NOT go in tubs, saunas, jacuzzis, swim in pools or lakes while your tattoo is healing.
Showers are fine, but try to keep your tattoo away from the direct stream of water.

  • Do NOT rub, pick, or scratch the area while healing. (If your tattoo itches, gently slap the area)
Do NOT touch your tattoo with unwashed hands. Loss of color or infection could occur.

  • Wear clean, loose clothing while your tattoo heals, and if you are able, sleep with clean blankets and sheets.
Beware of pet hair. Do not let your animals sleep with you or rub against your tattoo while healing.

  • If you feel your tattoo may be infected, contact your local physician as soon as possible. Infection may present itself as red, pus filled skin on or around your tattoo.
Your tattoo should heal within 3 weeks. If you have any questions, please give us a call at 763-276-7575.
